CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The day certainly hadn’t gone well. As Casey trudged home in the gathering dusk, he thought everything over. He had been late for school — a first! He had only sketched out his English assignment, praying he wouldn’t be asked to read it, but he was. He hadn’t even cracked open his math book, so of course there was a test. He had forgotten his lunch and hated what they were serving at the cafeteria — broccoli pizza. He had played like crazy to make the cut-off for the basketball team. Of course, he didn’t.

Now he was walking home to who knew what fate, with a load of books in his backpack that made it so heavy the straps cut into his shoulders. He pounded the snow off his boots outside, removed them in the back hall, and slung his backpack to the floor. The smell of ready-to-eat spaghetti and meatballs filled the house.

“Mom?”

“Hi, Casey. I thought you’d never get home.”

Casey went into the kitchen. The table was set for only two. “Where is everybody?” He was relieved that his confrontation with his father wasn’t going to happen right then.

“Up in Edmonton. It’s happening awfully fast, but Hank has decided he might want to go to university starting in January. He and your father went up to talk to some people. I think Hank knows his bad wrist will really slow him down at his computer. Looks like he’s beginning to think ahead. And with you-know-who up there …”

“Right.” Casey brightened a bit, remembering the happy look on Hank’s face last night. “Who will they be talking to?”

“I gather he’ll first speak to the associate dean of science, and if that goes well, then someone in the Department of Computer Sciences. Hank’s so good in both math and at the computer he shouldn’t have trouble getting into computer sciences. But we’ll just have to see.”

“When are they coming back?”

“Hank won’t be back for a couple of days. He and Dad are staying with Billy and Jake. I gather Hank and Sarah are going to some big party tomorrow night.” She looked at Casey and raised her eyebrows. “Your father will be back late tomorrow afternoon. Now wash your hands, let’s eat, and tell me about your day.”

By the time he had finished his third helping of spaghetti and meatballs and had gotten his mother’s sympathy about all his problems, Casey was feeling a whole lot better. Finally, she said, “Don’t worry about cleaning the kitchen. It seems to me you have more than enough to do.”

Casey hugged her. “Thanks, Mom. I’ve never been so tired in my life. I think I’ll have a shower, go to bed, and get up real early to study.”

“Sounds like a good idea. Good night.”

“Night, Mom.” Casey shouldered his backpack and climbed the stairs. At the door of his bedroom he stopped. There, sitting on a stand of its own, was a television. On top of it was a DVD player. Attached to the front of the television screen was a large sheet of white newsprint.
